A death in the Santa Cruz News family cut into posting yesterday but you should be able to expect things to return to normal schedule soon.

It’s Friday and that means it’s almost the start of another beautiful weekend. Looking for things to do? Look no further!

  • First Friday: A monthly event featuring gallery openings, art shows and other events downtown. Various locations.
  • Gluten-free beer tasting at BevMo!: This week’s beer tasting at BevMo! Capitola will be showcasing gluten-free beers and hard ciders. Each week, the shop serves a flight of 3-5 beers with a small snack. Friday, May 3 from 5-7 p.m., attendees will get to taste beers including 3R Raspberry Ale from New Planet Beer Company, Off Grid Pale Ale from New Planet Beer Company, Tread Lightly Ale from New Planet Beer Company, hard black cherry from Red Branch Cider Company and hard lemonade from Red Branch Cider Company. 1820 41st Ave., Capitola.
  • The Purple Ones: Don Quixote’s plays host to this Oakland-based 10 piece tribute to Prince on Friday. The band features four horns, two guitars, keyboards, drums and vocals. Tickets at $12. Doors open at 8 p.m. 6275 Highway 9, Felton
  • We Are Santa Cruz: The windows of the Rittenhouse Building on Pacific Avenue will feature giant screens showing film of Santa Cruz residents walking by and talking about why they love it here. The We Are Santa Cruz project kicks off Friday at 8 p.m. and will run every night for the next few months. It’s a project of Maximum Impact Productions. Bike to Work Week celebration at the Museum of Art and History, featuring music, bike-themed arts and crafts,  massages, bike decorating stations and even bike-blended margaritas. Friday, 5 – 9 p.m., 705 Front St., Santa Cruz.
  • Big Brew Day: It’s National Big Brew Day Saturday, a celebration of the art of homebrewing. Members of local homebrewing group the Central Coast Zymurgeeks will be brewing at the Seabright Brewery. Come over and learn about brewing, and have a few pints. Seabright Brewery, 519 Seabright Ave., Santa Cruz.
  • Bike commuting workshop: Bike to Work Week continues Saturday with a Bike Commuting 101 workshop and group ride with People Power. A workshop will start at 10 a.m. at the Bicycle Trip, 1001 Soquel Ave. The group ride begins at 11 a.m.
  • Roller Derby: The Santa Cruz Roller Derby Girls are putting on a double-header Sunday. Doors open at noon, the league’s grom team (the youth team) plays at 12:30 p.m. and then the Seabright Sirens will take on the West Coast Derby Knockouts. Kaiser Permanente (Warriors) Arena, 140 Front St., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $10 and $12.
  • Cabrillo Student Art Exhibition: The latest exhibition of Cabrillo student art kicks off Sunday with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. The exhibit will remain up through May 30. Cabrillo College, 6500 Soquel Dr., Library Room 1002, Aptos.
