Santa Cruz Derby Girls in “East Side: Santa Cruz Life”

September 13, 2013

I fully admit that until yesterday I had no idea there was a publication called East Side: Santa Cruz Life.

Apparently there is, however.

In honor of the Santa Cruz Derby Girls‘ Boardwalk Bombshells’ last home bout of 2013– which takes place tomorrow at the Warriors Arena – here’s a profile of the league that ran in the most recent issue of East Side: Santa Cruz Life.

From the piece:

“The Derby Girls league is a Santa Cruz sensation whose fans are fiercely loyal. The league is made up of three adult teams  — Boardwalk Bombshells, Harbor Hellcats, Seabright Sirens — and two youth teams — Grom Shells and Saltwater Sassies. Games are played at the Kaiser Permanente Arena, and the season runs from early March to early November. The Derby Girls is an official member league of the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association). The league is represented on the national level by its “A Team,” the Boardwalk Bombshells. The Bombshells is made up of the league’s strongest, most competitive skaters and travels all over the country to face the nation’s best teams. The Bombshells team is currently ranked no. 42 in the world, equating to no. 1 in Division 2 for the 2013 playoff period.”

Call “East Side Santa Cruz Life” the second coming of Patch, only in print. Yet another glossy “shopper” from a nationwide marketing organization, happy to accept free content from all and sundry — and probably depending on it.
