Woman on county’s most wanted list died nine years ago

July 12, 2013

Ooof.

This is a rough one.

Each week the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office releases a list of “most wanted” suspects compiled from law enforcement agencies throughout the county.

Unfortunately, somehow one of the people who ended up on this week’s list has actually been dead for nine years.

Stephen Baxter of the Sentinel reports:

“The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office apologized to a Soquel family Thursday after being informed that a woman on the County’s Most Wanted list died nine years ago.

Irene Koch was listed in the Sentinel and other media outlets on July Fourth for a 2002 warrant on suspicion of arson, said Santa Cruz County sheriff’s Sgt. Patrick Dimick.

Although she died in October 2004 in Santa Clara County, her warrant remained in the system. Koch was 48.

“We sympathize with the family’s feelings, and we’re sorry that this happened,” Dimick said Thursday. “It’s embarrassing for us.”

As any good journalist knows, it’s important to check your facts and check ‘em twice.
