The Great California Shakeout

Tomorrow is the state’s annual earthquake preparedness drill, the Great California Shakeout. 

It’s part of a worldwide drill in which millions of people will practice how to drop, cover and hold on at 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17. The international day of preparedness was first launched in California in 2008.

Nearly 32,000 are estimated to be taking part in tomorrow’s drill in Santa Cruz County alone. Statewide, more than 9 million people — at schools, workplaces and more — are signed up to participate. The bulk – 28,297 participants – are registered through K-12th schools throughout the county.
