6145051713_63ef07e4a5_bThe Boardwalk Bombshells, one of the teams of the Santa Cruz Derby Girls league, are celebrating reaching their first playoffs since the team’s inception in 2007.

The team will take on the Sacred City Derby Girls in Sacramento Saturday in a Women’s Flat Track Derby Association bout, according to Julie Jag of the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Sacred City is ranked No. 29 by the WFTDA, the sanctioning body for competitive roller derby.

“The Bombshells hold the No. 41 rank, which puts them at the top of Division II and on the cusp of the top 40, which play in D-I.

Win, or even come close, and Santa Cruz could earn enough points to break into elite company when the new rankings come out in July — but then they would also likely end up playing the best teams in the world in the D-I tournament in September. Lose, and they will stay near the top of D-II and have a better chance of winning a division title.”
