Santa Cruz Co. DA: Woman who made false rape claim at UC Santa Cruz campus will be charged

March 21, 2013

Santa Cruz County District Attorney Bob Lee announced on March 21 that the woman who told police she was beaten and raped on the UC Santa Cruz campus in February will be charged for making a false report.

Morgan Triplett, 20, a student at UC Santa Barbara, called 911 on Feb. 17, 2013 and reported she was attacked and then raped by a stranger she encountered while walking on path on the campus. She said she was looking for banana slugs at the time of the attack, which occurred just after noon on a Sunday.

Campus police, aided by the Santa Cruz Police department and Lee’s office, eventually determined Triplett’s story wasn’t true. She admitted she made up the story.

Triplett will be arraigned next week on a misdemeanor charge of giving police false information. Under state law, a conviction for this crime carries a maximum penalty of six months behind bars.
