The Penny Ice Creamery opening new downtown restaurant

October 14, 2013

I’d heard the rumors and seen a few job postings on Craigslist but until today, I couldn’t confirm anything.

Edible Monterey Bay has beaten me to the punch:

The owners of the Penny Ice Creamery and the Picnic Basket are opening a new restaurant downtown. The new place, to be called The Assembly, will be located in the former Aqua Bleu space on Pacific Avenue, near Kianti’s and Hoffman’s.

From Deborah Lurhman’s EMB piece:

The new restaurant was set to open by the end of the year, but $500,000 in financing from the Small Business Administration has been held up due to the government shutdown in Washington. “We got all the paperwork in and now we wait. The government’s closed down,” co-owner Zachary Davis told CBS Evening News in a report aired Oct 11.

“You know, I have a business partner and we have disagreements. But there is no disagreement that would be so serious that we would close the doors of our business to try and figure it out. That would be the death of our business. It just makes no sense to me,” he said of the gridlock in Washington.

Well darn, there’s another reason to dislike the shutdown. I’ve been a big fan of everything else Davis and partner Kendra Baker have done so far. It will definitely be interesting to see how this translates into a full-fledged restaurant.
