Star San Francisco chef to head new Santa Cruz venture

January 7, 2014

A chef who has worked in many of San Francisco’s hottest restaurants will soon be cooking up culinary masterpieces for folks in Santa Cruz.

Chef Carlos Espinas has been selected as the head chef of the Assembly, the latest venture from the owners of the Penny Ice Creamery and the Picnic Basket.

The Assembly, a full-service restaurant, will be located in the former Aqua Bleu space on Pacific Avenue. The 100-seat restaurant will be the largest in the city.

According to Edible Monterey Bay, owners Kendra Baker and Zachary Davis say Espinas will start work on Jan. 15. The restaurant may open as early as Valentine’s Day.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Inside Scoop blog reports that Espinas has spent the past three years as executive chef at the popular Comstock Saloon in North Beach. Prior to that, he worked at Piccino in Dogpatch, and in the kitchens of SF’s Incanto and Camino, among others.

Baker and Espinas met while Baker was working as a pastry chef at Bar Tartine.
