Busily judging...

Busily judging…

The California Beer Festival came, saw and conquered in Aptos this past weekend.

The judges panel including KSBW videographer Tom Lopez, Doug Maher of Sante Adairius Rustic Ales and AJ’s Market, and Mike Blaesser, Sentinel internet wizard and founder of Cruz Brews. The intrepid judges sipped their way through some 27 brews in a blind tasting Saturday afternoon.

The winner overall ended up being Peter B’s Brewpub of Monterey, which took top honors for the Legend of Laguna IPA.

Mike has a good post about his experiences as a first-time judge over at Cruz Brews. Check it out here.  His takeaway? Beer judging is a lot harder than it sounds.

The fine folks of Santa Cruz Waves have an entire gallery of photos from the event as well.

Peter B.’s? Probably ticks off some of the other brewers; it’s the in-house brew pub of the very fancy Portola Pub and Spa, not a stand-alone sink-or-swim operation like the rest of them run ;-)

Yeah, I think a lot of hardcore beer geeks were less than pleased with many aspects of the festival.
