Not your average wine tasting…

January 28, 2014

This event sounds incredibly fun.

The Santa Cruz Fruit Tree Project, which organizes gleaning and other events throughout the year, is hosting an event dedicated to homebrewing.

It’s not just beer at this party, though. The press release promises all sorts of fermented and brewed beverages, from homemade fruit wines to ciders, meads (a type of honey wine,) beer and even soft drinks. The event brings together more than a dozen homebrewers with a wide array of offerings, including plum, pear, and apple wines made from fruit harvested at Fruit Tree Project events, as well as other contributions like gluten-free beers and home-brewed root beer and other sodas.

From the press release for DIYine: Not Your Average Wine Tasting:

“Pineapple guava wine, pear cider, and homemade root beer are just a few of the amazing concoctions that will be available at this unusual tasting event. The event will be held from 6-10 p.m. at the Museum of Art and History, and will include music and hors d’oeuvres. As a fund-raiser for the Santa Cruz Fruit Tree Project, it will also include a silent auction. Tickets are available on a sliding scale from $20-50.

For the past three or four years, the Santa Cruz Fruit Tree Project has worked to put surplus fruit to good use, organizing community fruit harvests and events such as pressing cider, curing olives and drying persimmons, among others.

The Dusty Porch Orchestra and Strip Polka will be providing live music.
