Everybody’s working for the weekend: Events for Jan. 10-12, 2014

How the heck is it possible that we are already 10 days into the New Year? Holy cow! Don’t worry though, we’ve got you covered in terms of fun stuff to do this weekend. Here’s a look:

  • Fungus Fest: The Fortieth Annual Fungus Fair takes place this weekend, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It’s at the Louden Nelson Community Center, 301 Center St., Santa Cruz. Admission is $5 Friday, $10 Saturday and Sunday. See more from Hilltromper here.
  • Word Up!: Our local storytelling series returns Saturday with a theme of “Rise Up!: Stories about overcoming.” Featured storytellers will include Scott Barry, Jo-Ann Birch, Kay DeMartini, Ron Jones, Richard Stockton and Meris Walton. The show begins at 8 p.m. at the Broadway Playhouse in Santa Cruz. Tickets are $10. 
  • Researchers Anonymous: This group meets Saturday at the Museum of Art and History to discuss various aspects of local history. All are welcome to join from 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Ramblin’ Jack Elliott: Considered one of the pillars of the folk music community, this Grammy-award winner has made more than 40 albums and shared the stage with an impressive caliber of fellow artists. He’ll be taking the stage at Don Quixote’s in Felton Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the door.
  • Benefit for Typhoon Haiyan ReliefLocal teen Tyler Hayford, an award-winning pianist, will perform a solo concert to benefit the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The concert takes place at the Peace United Church of Christ at 900 High St. in Santa Cruz Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $5 for students.
  • Andy “Zap!” Jackson:  Local magician Andy “ZAP!” Jackson has been performing magic shows professionally for more than a decade. He’ll be performing at the Pacific Cultural Center at 1307 Seabright Ave. in Santa Cruz Saturday at 7:3 p.m. Tickets available at Streetlight Records, at magiczap.brownpapertickets.com, by calling 831-295-0449, or at the door.
  • Acoustic Shadows and the George Orwell Experience: Live music at Bocci’s Cellar at 9 p.m. Saturday
  • Comedy at Cafe Iveta: This monthly comedy showcase on the westside returns Friday at 7 p.m.
  • 8 10s at 8: The Santa Cruz County Actors Theater presents its 19th annual short play festival this weekend. The plays opened Jan. 3 and continue through Jan. 26, with evening performances at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; and matinee performances at 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $15 and all shows take place at Center Stage Theater, 1001 Center St. in Santa Cruz. Tickets available here. 
  • Are We There Yet?Planet Cruz will present this one-man, multimedia comedy show every Friday starting tonight through Feb. 28 at the Broadway Playhouse in Santa Cruz at 8 p.m.
  • Mighty Mike Schermer: This fixture of the Bay Area blues scene comes to the Crepe Place Saturday at 9 p.m.
  • Santa Cruz Warriors: Our own d-league team takes on the Maine Red Claws tonight at 7 p.m. at the Kaiser Permanente Arena.
