Everybody’s working for the weekend: Events for Feb. 14-16, 2014

February 14, 2014

Hmmm….so apparently today is some sort of Hallmark holiday. Whatever could it be?

Well, if you aren’t busy snuggling up to your sweetie this weekend or shoving bon bons in your face while sitting on the couch and binge-watching Netflix, there’s plenty of other fun to be had. Such as:

  • Brady’s Black Ball: Local Seabright dive bar extraordinaire Brady’s Yacht Club hosts its annual anti-Valentine’s Day party tonight. Dress up or don’t, wear black or don’t, come coupled or not – just come to have fun.
  • Rocky Horror Picture Show: The Del Mar presents this cult classic as its midnight movie this Friday and Saturday, complete with interactive performances by UC Santa Cruz’ own Rocky Horror enthusiasts, Slugs in Tights.
  • Heartbroken Valentines Day: The Crepe Place hosts a special V-Day show tonight with Skinny Ricky and the Casual Encounters and the indie rock stylings of Bonnie and the Bang Bangs.
  • The English Beat: These English ska revivalists come to Don Quixote’s Music Hall in Felton Sunday.
  • One Billion Rising:  Join Santa Cruz residents and one billion people around the world on Valentine’s Day in a free, family-friendly participatory experience for women and girls and those who love them as a way of raising awareness of domestic violence. Music and dancing will happen at the Kaiser Permanente Area from 5:30 to 7 p.m. tonight, with a candlelight walk starting at the Santa Cruz County Courthouse at 5 p.m. All proceeds will go to organizations that are dedicated to the prevention of violence against women, including the Survivors Healing Center, Walnut Avenue Women’s Center, Rising International and Women’s Crisis Support/Defensa de Mujeres.
  • Are We There Yet?Planet Cruz will present this one-man, multimedia comedy show every Friday through Feb. 28 at the Broadway Playhouse in Santa Cruz at 8 p.m.
  •  Improverts: The Improverts, a local improv troupe, present their show Acting Out on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Broadway Playhouse in Santa Cruz. Tickets are $12.
