Bookshop Santa Cruz gets grant from author James Patterson

February 20, 2014

Bookshop Santa Cruz is receiving a grant from bestselling author James Patterson.

Patterson, best known for his Alex Cross detective series, announced he’s giving $1 million to independent bookstores around the country, including our own Bookshop Santa Cruz.

“Every day, booksellers are out there saving our country’s literature,” Patterson told the San Francisco Chronicle.  “The work they do to support schools and the rest of their communities leaves a lasting love of reading in children and adults. I believe their work is vital to our future as a country. What are we if we don’t have our own literature? I couldn’t be happier to, very humbly, support booksellers in their mission. Maybe that’s because it’s my mission as well.”

Other bookstores in northern California who are slated to receive funding are Book Passage in Corte Madera, Gallery Bookshop in Mendocino and Hicklebee’s in San Jose.
